Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition was released on to the marketplace today. I have played the game a reasonable amount and so far I'm very happy with it. The game definitely works well with the controller, even though many people including myself thought it may be too awkward for a primarily PC game. But, it works, simple as that.
The game features everything that was in Minecraft PC version during 1.6.6 so that does mean there is no hunger bar and sprint, as well as many other features. I'm not overly worried about this as these features shall be coming in the future and the game is still lots of fun anyway. It's actually rather nostalgic playing an earlier version of Minecraft again. The updates will come though in order to bring it up to a version closer to that of it's PC counterpart.
Playing Minecraft on a TV whilst lying back on a couch is simply... awesome. Especially when playing splitscreen, it works really well and can be done either vertically or horizontally depending on your choice, as simple as this feature is it's still nice to be able to choose. I have always found Minecraft to be an incredibly social game and have always loved playing it with friends, so being able to play four player splitscreen is a big bonus. The game also runs really well and doesn't see any real frame rate drops even in splitscreen.
The world size in the Xbox edition is not as big as the PC version, which we all expected due to the sheer amount of information the Xbox would have to cope with. I have found it still to be plenty so far. I have been exploring my surrounding land for a while and it looks and feels great. A little tool to help you get around this world is the map. When you first spawn into the world, the only item your given is a map. This is too help you find your friends and also your way home since the very much used "/tp" command is of course not available on the Xbox. This map is only provided on your first life though, so if you die you had better slept in a bed to reset your spawn or know your way back to your friends.
One thing that I have noticed is about Aggressive Mobs. They seem to be doing a tonne of damage to me, and I mean a tonne. It actually makes you really wary of entering caverns and what not. I remember being able to fight off loads of Mobs and walk about to my hearts content really, but on this version... no, just no. In my current mine there are many shafts which lead to caves and I am definitely not heading in there without some major equipment. It also gets dark, really dark. When I am doing the typical stair mining technique it seems to be 5 or 6 steps before I seriously need a torch. It was more like 10 or 12 on the PC for me. The game seems harder overall to me, and so far I'm loving it!
The thing many people are worried about is the crafting system. Sure it isn't what we have come to know and love but it's the only option for a controller. It works and that's all that really matters. It doesn't effect me with the recipes really, as I know the majority of them anyway, but I believe for new players they really are missing the full Minecraft experience of being dropped in a world with nothing, no tools, no recipes, no tips and being told to survive. It makes it seriously fun on the first night! You had no idea what the hell was going outside of your sub-par shelter in complete darkness. Now that has gone with the addition of a tutorial and pop up tips throughout the game. It's a shame for newcomers but no big deal for a experienced player.
All in all, the game is great. It is well worth the 1600 Microsoft Points and will give you hours and hours of enjoyment. If your skeptical about the control scheme and crafting system still I would really urge you to try the trial version to just get a grasp of what is too come.
We hope to be bringing you Minecraft content in the near future. At this moment in time we are simply too busy to record quality game play and would not want to produce rushed, sub-par videos on such an awesome game. Our series should be getting soon but we'll update you closer too the time.
